Checkmate is a unique chess holiday for young people, with lots of competitive games, outdoor and indoor, plus some great food. It is situated in a beautiful area with lots of space and quiet overlooking the Harold Odell Country Park. Parents arrive at the Chellington Centre to drop off their young people for the exciting, action-packed Checkmate residential holiday for 9-17 year olds. Checkmate was conceived by Kevin Moore in 2005 and took several years to come to fruition in October 2008. This chess residential is a uniquely popular holiday, attracting young people from across the UK and abroad with some young people attending from South Korea, France and Germany in recent years.

Kevin runs the holiday as one of two Face2Face Educational holidays back to back at the purpose built centre overlooking the Harold Odell Country Park amongst the rolling hills of rural Bedfordshire. Near the quiet village of Carlton, the Chellington Centre, [transformed from an obsolete church on a hill] is an ideal venue for such a holiday.

Competitive chess, fun games, late nights, good food, lots of fun, super campfire, outdoor games, indoor competitions, interactive Bible devotions all make for a fascinating action-packed 6 days. Many young people go home and sleep anything from 10-14 hours!

Spiderball at the Harold Odell Country Park several years ago. Great fun and the winners will be all down to good teamwork. On route we often call in at the local shop for some confectionery.

Breakfast is at 8.30am [some mornings the young people are called from their slumbers! After tidying cabins and cleaning up after breakfast we start the day with a Bible devotion together in a room offering a panoramic view of Bedfordshire countryside and Harold Odell Country Park.

The chess is a central part to the specialist holiday giving plenty of scope to play matches in a tournament running throughout the 6 days, plus daily chess puzzles, an evening chess simultaneous display, some chess training and plenty of spontaneous friendlies. The standard of chess play is very good with some tight matches and fierce battles. Prizes are awarded according to performance at the end of Checkmate.

Chess skills improve that help logic solving skills, concentration and decision making abilities. Chess play over the board is a healthy game to learn and play. The holiday attracts the competitive player, boys and girls from 9-17 years. Beyond 17 years, Kevin will invite suitable young people to serve on team with extra responsibilities to invest back into the holiday.

The knock out table football is a fiercely competitive knock out tournament at Checkmate but thinking about it so is everything from cabin inspection to Kwik Cricket, Spiderball to the outdoor Blob Tag and outdoor bowls!

Young leaders are nurtured during Checkmate like Jake above who has attended pretty much every year since Checkmate began in 2008. Young leaders have much to offer in serving on team, showing responsible attitudes, modelling good behaviour to younger boys and girls and sharing their own experiences.

Sunsets are beautiful over the valleys and there are some excellent photographic opportunities during the week.
