CHESS EDUCATIONAL DAY IN SCHOOLS

Dear Headteacher,

I am offering a chess day in schools to link in with the Maths and RE curriculum subjects for junior aged pupils. I offer a flexible day or half day that involves chess teaching and coaching, a mini tournament, a chess quiz, some fun games and icebreakers and a Biblical input linking the nine chess pieces with nine biblical characters. I work for Face2Face Educational Trust, a Christian Trust that puts on educational projects in schools, clubs and churches in East Anglia and beyond.

I have experience in running chess clubs for many years and have nurtured chess teams and organized a number of regional tournaments in East Anglia. I set up a chess residential holiday called Checkmate in 2008 for young people that has proved popular over the years with boys and girls from 9-17 years.

If interested discuss details from Kevin, there may be some places left.

Teaching my children to play chess was one of the best things I have ever done. – Kevin Moore

You don’t have to be a Grandmaster to play chess, in fact many people will play at a basic level and thoroughly enjoy the game. My heart is to teach people how to play the game and over the years I have been successful in doing that with many children, young people and adults, including teaching my dad during a series of power cuts in the seventies and my three children when they were 8, 6 and 4 years.

Chess skills can build self confidence in children, is not age specific and is a game played by people all over the world. When visiting Nepal I played a game on the streets in Kathmandu and in a children’s orphanage and even saw posters up in a leprosy mission hospital, I reckon there were some sets around too. – Kevin Moore

A Headteacher in Kings Lynn has just booked me up for the day and he is advertising me as ‘the next best thing to a Grandmaster’ and has asked me to play a simultaneous display against all 20 players in his chess club! I am not a GM but a decent player with good experience over many years running chess clubs and working with children and young people and would be willing to play a simultaneous display in your school, if you have the players to take me on. You may not be at the stage and want a teaching/coaching time with a mini tournament for beginners. Either way, I am flexible to adjust to your situation and will mix the day up a bit anyway.

The game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions, for life is a kind of chess. – Benjamin Franklin
