CHRISTINGLE

Kevin presented a Christmas assembly today to 400 children in a local junior school. He involved 15 children & used pre drawn visuals & demonstrated with an orange, dolly mixtures, red ribbon & a candle the heart of the Christmas message found in the Bible. The idea of The Christingle came from a German priest in the 18 century who wanted a different way to present the message. Children contributed to the idea & added different ingredients to represent different aspects of the message. The orange represents the world in which we live & God created. The dolly mixtures represent the four seasons & the fruit we eat. The red ribbon tied around the orange represents the blood of Jesus that was spilt at the cross 2000 years ago at Calvary. The lit up candle stands for Jesus the light of the world, who offers His light to all who would accept Him into their lives as Lord & Saviour. Jesus said: “I am the light of the world, he who follows Me will not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” John 10:10

Christmas presents a variety of opportunities to share about & explain the heart of the gospel story. It is true that Jesus Christ was born around two thousand years ago, however there was no lavish palace for the King of kings, nor was there any limousine escort to the Bethlehem hospital.  Luke states that His birth place was a cave used by animals & his bed a manger of straw. There was no red carpet treatment, midwifery team or film crew. Just think if Christ was born today there would be 24 hour television news broadcasts, constant journalistic reporting & consultation with TV experts. Mary was a mere teenager & Joseph was probably in his early twenties.  You can imagine their surprise when Magi appeared one day to their temporary home, bringing expensive gifts of gold, frankincense & myrrh.

Jesus probably remembers little of his early years in Egypt following the attempt by the insecure King Herod to rid the land of Israel of this new born king. Following Herod’s death they returned to their Jewish homeland & set up home base in Nazareth, a hilly town. We know that Jesus grew up in humble surrounds learning from his earthly father in the workshop developing his carpentry & skills & tool techniques. Jesus was fully human & therefore knew what it was like to get a splinter underneath his skin & to bang his thumb with a hammer! He was also the unique Son of Man with a special anointing on his life & often retreated to a quiet place up the hillside to spend time with His Heavenly Father. He prayed, listened, worshiped, interceded & communicated with His spiritual Father all the time & revealed over those years the love of God to Mary & witnessed powerfully to His brothers & sister within their humble home in Nazareth. No doubt He appeared very different to them & many times they did not understand Him.

His public ministry started at around 30 years of age & was dramatic following His water baptism in the Jordan river from John, & His spiritual baptism when the Holy Spirit came upon Him in bodily form. Jesus then spent time away in the desert fasting & praying for His public ministry that would take the world by storm in the following years. ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but shall have eternal life.’ Jesus returned from the wilderness in the power of the Spirit & read these words: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners & recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”  He was boldly declaring that His public ministry had begun. The crowd sought to kill Him but He walked through the middle of them & went on His way, from town to town, village to village sharing the good news of the gospel & declaring that the kingdom of God had come. It was to be an incredible journey that would upturn many lives & continues to do so today across the nations.
