SKETCHPAD 2017

Sketchpad is a unique art specialist holiday for young people, with lots of creative challenges,, outdoor and indoor, plus some great food, fun games and lovely people. It is situated in a beautiful area with lots of space and quiet overlooking the Harold Odell Country Park. Sketchpad is run by Face2Face Educational Trust, a Christian Trust that puts on two residential holidays a year, Sketchpad and Checkmate plus lots of clubs, events and courses for children, adults and families.

Blue skies, sunsets, fluffy clouds, undulating hills, cattle, nesting wrens, soaring buzzards, shrieking kestrels, old trees and the character of the Chellington Centre are all part of the experience. Young people explore art work in a variety of different medium including graphite, conte, pencils, watercolour pencils, acrylic tile painting. Subjects include still life, life drawing, landscapes, some challenges are 20-60 minutes, others several hours in duration. Each person puts together a range of work for an end of the week gallery that proves to be visually impressive and builds artistic confidence.

The holiday is open to anyone in the UK and abroad and in recent years we have had young people attend from Seoul in South Korea, Paris in France and Germany.
We look at portrait drawing and include a celebrity portrait and have a range to choose from.

Keen artist, Kevin Moore runs the Face2Face art residential for young people each year in August for 9-17 year olds. We have great fun in super weather, producing lots of artwork in six action-packed days surrounded by beautiful rolling hills overlooking the Harold Odell Country Park.

Kevin would set challenges each day for the team and young people to attempt to the best of their ability. Constructive guidance is given to students in developing techniques, using a variety of different medium, etc. Confidence is built over the week in a positive environment that cultivates artistic expression.

When finished these tile artworks make a lovely souvenir of Sketchpad.

Kevin had the idea for Sketchpad in 2011 and set up the first holiday for August 2012. Now established in it’s seventh year it is proving to be a very enjoyable holiday for creative young people and the volunteer team. There are limited places available so do book early to avoid disappointment. I cannot highlight how positive this residential is for any young people keen to develop their artistic expression.

Inside we play a table football tournament, Kwik cricket, Spiderball and various other fun games. This year we added in a badminton singles tournament and volleyball and a dance off. Sometimes we incorporate games and art, for example when two students sat playing a couple of games of chess for our late night drawing challenge whilst the other students drew them in an hour.

Trips to the nearby Carlton Village shop are always greeted with enthusiasm on route back from the park or country park. An interactive Bible devotion is held each day with the children. Children enjoy the tranquil setting, the action-packed programme that runs late into the evening.

Spectacular sunsets are observed during our time at Chellington, some will be inspiration for future paintings for sure.

Discovering an ants nest and watching their team work in moving the eggs, wow!

Friends often appear over the wall to say ‘hello!’

The setting is peaceful countryside in a character building, 10 miles from Bedford.

Indoor and outdoor games are suitably enjoyed.

Sketchpad is run by Face2Face Educational Trust, a Christian Trust that puts on projects, activities, events and residentials for children, young people and families in England. Kevin runs the Sketchpad and Checkmate residentials in August each year back to back. Some young people come to both holidays, whilst some families book one child into Sketchpad and others into Checkmate. All the team are child friendly, DBS checked and work in catering or with Kevin in the art and other aspects of the programme. Children sleep in cabins and play their part each day in some practical duties to help the programme along. The food is of a high standard and the creative input stimulating and encouraging.

The dance off to get to the final three, one or two would be eliminated each song. The standard was high and was won by a lad who attended dancing school, see bottom right.
The final three in action, Ray’s face captures it completely. The winner on the right did some amazing acrobatics.
